Flash Media Services

About Us

Is Flash really her last name?

Yes, it is. Like many last names, it was changed slightly from Flasch to Flash when her grandfather immigrated to Canada. And Flash has proven to be a great name for someone in the media.

When Cynthia Flash started her first job with United Press International in 1985, the wire service was still using teletype machines to deliver the news to newsrooms all over the world.

At the time, a “News Flash” was the most important news to cross the wire - something reserved for declarations of war and assassinations of presidents. When Flash filed her first story from the two-person Boise, Idaho, bureau - a story about a car accident - bells on the wire machines rang out throughout the world. A grizzled managing editor from Washington, D.C. quickly picked up the phone to chastise Flash and ask her to change her byline.

She refused. Instead, UPI had to change the way it programmed its wire machines. The Flash byline has stayed in the news ever since.
